Ukraine's Zelensky to meet Trump, seeking stronger U.S. support

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to visit the White House on Tuesday for crucial talks with Donald Trump, seeking to bolster American support as diplomatic avenues remain blocked and both sides intensify long-range attacks. The meeting, scheduled for 9:30 a.m. local time, occurs more than four years into Russia's full-scale invasion.

Zelensky expressed his anticipation for the meeting, stating, "We are preparing for a meeting with the President of the United States and his team." He hopes Washington will "continue to support Ukraine and that we can end this war with a dignified peace." This visit comes as Ukrainian drones reportedly targeted the Moscow region overnight, with local authorities reporting some damage to residences.

While Zelensky seeks renewed commitment, Trump's past policies have seen him largely halt direct U.S. arms deliveries to Kyiv, favoring a program where Europeans purchase arms for transfer to Ukraine. Despite this, the U.S. remains a key ally, providing intelligence and access to Starlink for Ukrainian military communications. Previous interactions between Zelensky and Trump have been marked by tension, including a public dispute in early 2025. However, Trump has recently shown more leniency, complimenting Zelensky's work during a prior meeting.

Adding to the context of the visit, the meeting coincides with a tribute for Senator Lindsey Graham, a staunch supporter of Ukraine, who passed away on July 11 at age 71. The dynamics of this meeting are critical, as Ukraine continues its defense against Russian aggression and seeks sustained international backing.
