Ukrainian musician brings his homeland's culture to the world amid war

In the midst of Russia's full-scale invasion of his homeland, Ukrainian pianist Taras Filenko is undertaking a global mission to share his nation's rich culture. Filenko, a former associate dean at the Ukrainian National Academy of Music in Kyiv, has performed in over 100 venues across the US, South America, Africa, and China since February 2022.

Filenko's performances are more than just musical recitals. He dedicates 80% of his preparation time to selecting Ukrainian paintings, sculptures, and traditional instruments to accompany his music, alongside composing lectures on his country's cultural history. This approach aims to provide audiences, many encountering Ukrainian culture for the first time, with a deeper appreciation by presenting music within its broader context.

"I'm not interested in simply playing beautiful music, but in presenting it within its cultural context. In particular, I try to find images that enable the strongest possible emotional connection with each piece," Filenko explained. He believes this method helps audiences connect more profoundly with the emotional depth of Ukrainian art.

During his recent tour in South Korea, Filenko made a point of visiting local cultural sites, including the National Folk Museum of Korea, to explore traditional Korean instruments. This effort reflects his ongoing commitment to drawing connections between Ukrainian culture and those of the nations he visits, fostering a sense of shared humanity and understanding even as his country endures conflict.
