Ulsan to Cultivate 2,000 Digital Talents for Shipbuilding Industry, Establishing Training Hub

Ulsan City is taking a significant step to revitalize its core shipbuilding industry by focusing on digital transformation and talent development. The city has been selected for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's 'Core Talent Digital Training Base Construction Project for the Shipbuilding Industry,' a move that underscores its commitment to modernizing a vital sector.

Starting this year and running until 2030, Ulsan will invest 30 billion won, with 20 billion won coming from national funds, to create a specialized training hub. This hub, operated in partnership with the Ulsan Information Industry Promotion Agency and the University of Ulsan, will focus on nurturing 2,000 practical professionals skilled in artificial intelligence (AI) and data technology.

This will be an opportunity to transform the shipbuilding industry into a technology-centered industry.

The project will leverage existing facilities like the Ulsan Information Industry Promotion Agency's integrated data center and the university's shipbuilding and marine engineering building. It will also incorporate advanced equipment such as XR simulators and digital twin technology to train both job seekers and current employees. Furthermore, the initiative includes support for small and medium-sized enterprises, offering access to an open lab to bridge the technology gap for companies that cannot afford high-end equipment.

City officials express optimism that this program will ensure a timely supply of skilled labor, reduce the dependence on foreign workers, and ultimately transition the shipbuilding industry into a technology-centric field. Ulsan aims to solidify its position as a leading center for digital talent in the shipbuilding sector.
