UN chief urges international support for Syria on first visit since before civil war

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in Damascus on Saturday, marking his first visit to Syria since before the devastating civil war began. He called for international support for the nation, emphasizing the UN's commitment to assisting Syria during this critical transitional period.

"My message is clear: The UN stands with Syria at this pivotal moment and I appeal to the international community to spare no effort to support the people of Syria as well," Guterres stated on the social media platform X. His visit is the first by a UN chief since Ban Ki-moon visited in 2009, two years prior to the conflict that has since claimed over half a million lives.

During his visit, Guterres met with President Ahmed al-Sharaa at the presidential palace. State media also showed images of him touring the historic Umayyad Mosque in Damascus. His delegation was received at the airport by Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani.

According to Guterres's spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, the UN chief aims to highlight the opportunity for Syria not only to recover from conflict but also to establish foundations for a future characterized by stability, inclusivity, and prosperity for all Syrians. Guterres is also scheduled to meet with representatives from Syrian civil society and NGOs, as well as visit a UN peacekeeping force stationed in the Golan Heights.
