UN chief urges respect for Syria's sovereignty, international support

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres made his first visit to Syria under the new authorities, urging respect for the nation's sovereignty and territorial integrity. He called for an end to Israeli violations, particularly in the Golan Heights, and appealed for international support for Syria's ongoing political transition. Guterres emphasized that violations of Syria's sovereignty are unacceptable and highlighted the situation around the Golan Heights as particularly concerning, reiterating that the territory is Syrian.

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani echoed these sentiments, demanding the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of Israeli forces from the UN-patrolled buffer zone on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. He stated that Israel's continued military actions and occupation beyond the 1974 line pose a direct threat to regional security. Al-Shaibani called for a firm UN stance to ensure Israel's withdrawal.

Guterres described his visit as one of solidarity during a "pivotal" moment for Syria. He framed Syria's recovery as a humanitarian imperative and an investment in regional peace and stability, calling Syria the "pillar of stability of the Middle East."
