UN chief visit to Syria seen by Damascus as key step towards reconstruction after war

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has arrived in Damascus for a visit aimed at showing solidarity and bolstering support for Syria's reconstruction after years of civil war. The trip is seen by the Syrian government as a pivotal moment, especially following recent developments such as a new pipeline deal linking Iraq to the port of Baniyas and a meeting between Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and U.S. President Donald Trump.

During his visit, Guterres stated, “My message is clear: the UN stands with Syria at this pivotal moment, and I appeal to the international community to spare no effort to support the people of Syria as well.” Syrian state media reported that discussions with Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani focused on deepening cooperation, with reconstruction, recovery, and Syria’s sovereignty dominating the talks.
