UN Chief Visits Syria for First Time in 15 Years, Appeals for International Aid

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres made a significant visit to Syria on July 25, marking the first time a UN chief has set foot in the war-torn country since 2009. Guterres arrived in the capital, Damascus, calling for robust international support for the Syrian people. He met with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa at the presidential palace, conveying a message of solidarity during this critical juncture. The visit underscores the UN's commitment to assisting Syria as it navigates a transition period following the overthrow of the former regime. Guterres's trip follows the end of a protracted civil war that began in 2011, which claimed over half a million lives. Before meeting President al-Sharaa, Guterres toured the historic Old City of Damascus and the Umayyad Mosque, where the new leadership had previously delivered a victory speech. The UN spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, stated that Guterres's mission was to emphasize that the current opportunity is not just about recovering from conflict but also about building a foundation for a future where all Syrians can live more securely, inclusively, and prosperously. Guterres also planned to engage with civil society groups, including those focused on women's issues, and visit UN peacekeeping forces stationed in the Golan Heights since 1974.
