UN Human Rights Chief urges Israel to withdraw from south Lebanon and stop destroying homes

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, called on Israel to end its occupation of large parts of southern Lebanon and cease the destruction of homes in the area. Türk's statement comes days before new rounds of direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel are scheduled.

Following meetings in Lebanon with government officials, civil society representatives, and war-displaced individuals, Türk indicated that some Israeli actions could be considered war crimes. This echoes accusations from various human rights organizations regarding Israeli destruction of villages and towns, which have resulted in the deaths of medical workers and journalists.

"Destruction of this type activates strong warning signs regarding compliance with international humanitarian law," Türk stated, describing the events in southern Lebanon as "widespread destruction" of civilian homes. Israel maintains that it targets Hezbollah members and infrastructure, asserting that the group hides among civilians and that its troops have found weapons depots and tunnel networks belonging to Hezbollah in occupied southern Lebanon.

Türk also criticized Hezbollah for its attacks on northern Israeli cities. He urged an end to Israel's occupation of southern Lebanon and called for the safe return of displaced persons to their homes. He mentioned attempting to contact Israeli authorities to visit Israel after Lebanon but had not yet received a response.
