UN message for Vesak 2026: Awaken compassion, build a peaceful world

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a message for Vesak 2026, calling on the global community to cultivate compassion and work towards a more peaceful and sustainable world. The message, delivered on the occasion of Buddha's birthday, emphasizes the enduring relevance of Buddhist teachings in addressing contemporary global challenges.

Guterres reflected on his visit to Lumbini, Nepal, the birthplace of the Buddha, stating that the experience reinforced his belief in the power of the Buddha's teachings on non-violence, compassion, and service to others as solutions to today's instabilities. He expressed hope that inspired by the Buddha's example, humanity can awaken a shared sense of compassion to build a world that is both peaceful and sustainable, a world everyone deserves.

On the occasion of the Great Vesak Festival of Buddhist Era 2570, I send to all monks, nuns, and Buddhist followers wishes for peace and happiness.

In Vietnam, the message resonates as the nation enters a new phase of development following administrative reforms and legislative updates. The message from the Most Venerable Thich Tri Quang, Patriarch of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, also highlights the significance of Buddhist principles in guiding national progress. He noted that decisions prioritizing the people's welfare foster unity and lead to successful outcomes, echoing the ancient teachings of the Chakravartin Suttanta.

Both messages underscore the importance of applying Buddhist wisdom in daily life and societal endeavors. Guterres urged for the light of compassion to spread, warming hearts and improving lives, while the Vietnamese Buddhist leader called for disciples to actively embody these teachings. Ceremonies and processions are being held across Vietnam, including in Ho Chi Minh City and Vung Tau, to mark the Vesak celebration, culminating in the main ceremony at Vietnam Quoc Tu Pagoda on May 31.
