UN records highest civilian casualties in Ukraine since March 2022

The United Nations has reported a significant surge in civilian casualties in Ukraine during July, marking the highest figures since March 2022. According to a UN press release, the conflict resulted in at least 437 civilian deaths and 2,610 injuries within the month.

This represents a substantial increase compared to previous periods. Civilian casualties rose by 30 percent from June and saw a 70 percent jump when compared to July of the previous year. The UN's human rights monitoring mission in Ukraine, led by Danielle Bell, highlighted the escalating dangers faced by civilians.

"Civilians are exposed to greater danger as a result of the increased use of missiles and drones in urban centers, glide bombs in cities closer to the front lines, and short-range drones," Bell stated. These tactics contribute to the heightened risk and frequency of civilian harm.

Since the full-scale invasion began on February 24, 2022, the UN has documented a total of 16,874 civilian deaths. The latest figures underscore the ongoing and severe impact of the conflict on Ukraine's civilian population, particularly in areas affected by intensified military operations.
