UN Secretary-General Visits Syria for First Time in Over 15 Years

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has arrived in Syria for a visit described as one of "solidarity," marking the first time a UN chief has set foot in the country in over 15 years. His last visit was in 2010, when he served as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

During his stay, Guterres is scheduled to meet with Ahmed al-Scharaa, the transitional president who assumed leadership after a rebel alliance ousted the government of Bashar al-Assad in late 2024. The agenda also includes discussions with representatives from civil society and women's organizations. Additionally, Guterres will meet with the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) mission stationed on the Golan Heights, which monitors a buffer zone between Israel and Syria.

This visit underscores Syria's evolving international standing. Following years of isolation after the civil war began in 2011, the country is now actively rebuilding ties with the global community. The recent visit of French President Emmanuel Macron also signals this shift. The UN continues to be a vital lifeline for the Syrian population, with approximately 15.6 million people still reliant on humanitarian assistance amid ongoing challenges like food insecurity and damaged infrastructure.
