UN Sustainability Goals: Steinmeier Opens International Sustainability Conference

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier officially opened the third Hamburg Sustainability Conference (HSC) on Monday, under the motto "The Power of Cooperation: Driving Progress Together." The two-day international gathering in Hamburg brings together leaders from politics, business, science, and civil society to address critical global challenges.

The conference's central themes include building resilient economies, advancing technology, and securing the future of the planet. Organizers highlighted that the event also delves into risks, conflicts, and the future of human collaboration. A key focus is the effective integration of the private sector to create new synergies and generate fresh momentum for sustainable development.

This year's conference addresses a perceived decline in global commitment to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By convening actors from all relevant sectors, the HSC seeks to revitalize efforts and ensure progress towards the 17 goals, which encompass ending poverty and hunger, ensuring clean water and energy, promoting decent work, quality education, climate action, and peace.

Running parallel to the conference is the Hamburg Sustainability Week, which began Friday and continues until July 3rd. With over 200 events under the slogan "We Make Future. Together.", the week aims to bring the UN's 17 sustainability goals to life at a local level. Previous conferences in 2024 and 2025 saw approximately 3,200 guests from over 120 countries, including heads of state and leaders of international organizations, leading to the launch of around 25 initiatives and alliances.
