Undav fires Germany to 2-1 win over Ivory Coast and place in the knockouts

Substitute Deniz Undav scored twice to inspire a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory for Germany against Ivory Coast in their World Cup Group E match, securing their place in the knockout stage. This marks Germany's first progression to the knockouts since they won the title in 2014.

Germany had two goals disallowed in the first half, but they maintained focus and employed intricate passing, while Ivory Coast showcased their dynamic attacking style. Undav leveled the score in the 68th minute with a controlled volley and then netted the winner in stoppage time, turning and firing past a helpless Yahia Fofana.

Ivory Coast had initially taken the lead in the first half when Franck Kessie slotted home a rebound from Amad Diallo's shot, a play initiated by Yan Diomande's charge down the left flank. Despite the presence of over 100,000 people of German ancestry in Toronto, the German team was frustrated at halftime with no goals to show for their efforts.

Germany now leads Group E with six points, guaranteeing their advancement. Ivory Coast remains on three points after two matches. The group's remaining fixtures will see Ecuador face Curacao, Germany play Ecuador, and Ivory Coast take on Curacao.
