Underground bunker found at Guayas women’s prison

Ecuador’s armed forces uncovered an underground bunker beneath the floor of the Female Detention Center No. 2 on the road to Daule, in Guayas province. The hidden space allegedly operated as a smuggling point inside the prison.

Personnel from the Guayas Infantry Brigade found drugs, bladed weapons, mobile phones, chargers and alcoholic drinks inside the structure. The discovery came during an operation focused on weapons, ammunition and explosives.

The soldiers noticed irregularities in the density of the ceramic flooring. They broke through the tiled structure with screwdrivers and other tools, revealing the underground space and the items stored beneath it.

According to information reported by Teleamazonas, the drugs may have been intended for sale inside the prison at $20 per dose. The armed forces said the contraband and narcotics had an estimated value of nearly $20,000.

Authorities still need to determine how the structure was built, who had access to it and how the drugs and other items entered the prison.
