Understanding 'woke' culture's impact on political discourse

The term "woke," literally meaning "awake," has evolved significantly from its origins in African American culture to become a central, often contentious, element in contemporary political discourse, particularly in the United States. Initially, it described an alert and active stance against social injustices, especially racism, gender inequality, and discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals.

The expression's roots trace back to the early 20th century in the U.S. as a caution to remain vigilant against racism and violence targeting Black people. Its visibility surged with the Black Lives Matter movement, which gained momentum following the 2013 acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed African American teenager. This case reignited debates on racism and police brutality.

By 2017, the Oxford Dictionary included a definition of "woke" as being "aware of social and political issues, especially racism." The term's trajectory shifted dramatically as conservative political sectors, particularly during Donald Trump's first term and campaigns, began employing it pejoratively. Trump frequently used "woke" to critique progressive stances on race, identity, and social matters, framing them as a radical agenda infiltrating American institutions.

This usage became a staple in Republican electoral rhetoric, targeting policies related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The "woke culture" is now often characterized by conservative critics as a complex social and political phenomenon associated with negative impositions and contributing to perceived social decay, contrasting sharply with its original meaning of heightened social consciousness.
