UNESCO Commemorates Kim Koo's 150th Birth Anniversary with August Events in South Korea

South Korea's Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs is spearheading a series of commemorative activities throughout August to honor the 150th anniversary of Kim Koo's birth, a milestone officially recognized by UNESCO as a "UNESCO Commemorative Year."

UNESCO's decision to designate this year for Kim Koo, a prominent figure in Korea's independence movement, stems from an evaluation at its 43rd General Assembly last October. The organization recognized that Kim Koo's vision of pursuing world peace through "the power of culture" rather than military or economic might aligns with UNESCO's universal values.

The ministry's commemorative initiatives aim to allow the public to engage with Kim Koo's life and philosophy and reflect on their significance. A key event is "Culture Week," scheduled from August 25 to 30. This week will include public participation-oriented music performances and an international academic conference highlighting Kim Koo's leadership. Additionally, a media wall themed around Kim Koo's famous quote, "My Wish," will be installed in Gwanghwamun from August 26 to 30.

The main commemorative ceremony for Kim Koo's 150th birth anniversary is set for August 29. Leading up to Culture Week, the ministry has also launched a mobile game detailing Kim Koo's independence movement journey and conducted promotional campaigns in four cities to generate public interest.
