UniCal to host 50,000 athletes at 2026 NUGA Games – VC

The University of Calabar (UniCal) is gearing up to host the prestigious 2026 Nigeria Universities Games Association (NUGA) Games, an event expected to draw around 50,000 athletes from more than 50 universities nationwide. The biennial sporting festival is scheduled to take place from November 14 to November 24, 2026.

UniCal's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Offiong Offiong, announced the university's readiness, emphasizing the event's role in fostering academic and athletic excellence while reinforcing unity among Nigerian universities. He assured stakeholders of a memorable event grounded in integrity, fairness, and sportsmanship. Athletes will compete across 28 different sporting disciplines during the games.

Security is a top priority, with the university collaborating closely with security agencies to ensure a safe and seamless competition. Calabar is recognized as one of Nigeria's most peaceful cities, but comprehensive measures are being implemented to guarantee the safety of all participants and visitors. The university also plans to construct a sports complex as a legacy project, intended to serve as a lasting reminder of the games and contribute to the development of future sporting champions.

Professor Offiong appealed for support from various stakeholders, including government bodies, corporate organizations, alumni, and development partners, to ensure the successful execution of the games. He acknowledged the Cross River State Government's ongoing support and partnership. The NUGA Games, first held in 1966, were last hosted by UniCal in 1990, making the 2026 event a significant return for the institution.
