Unification Ministry Slams Ex-President Yoon's Sentencing for Alleged Drone Provocation

South Korea's Ministry of Unification issued a strong condemnation following the sentencing of former President Yoon Suk-yeol to 30 years in prison for allegedly orchestrating a drone infiltration into Pyongyang to provoke North Korea. The ministry labeled the former president's actions as a "historical tragedy" and an "unacceptable act" that pushed the Korean Peninsula to the brink of war.

The Seoul Central District Court found Yoon guilty of charges including treason and abuse of power, ruling that he deliberately created an emergency situation to justify the declaration of martial law. The court sentenced Yoon to 30 years, while former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun also received a 30-year sentence. Former Director of the National Intelligence Service, Yeo In-hyeong, was sentenced to 15 years, and former Commander of the Drone Operations Command, Kim Yong-dae, received a three-year suspended sentence for his role in the drone operation.

In its statement, the Ministry of Unification expressed deep regret over the verdict, stating, "The court ruled that former President Yoon Suk-yeol induced North Korean provocation by infiltrating drones into Pyongyang with the aim of creating a state of emergency, and sentenced him to 30 years in prison." The ministry emphasized that such actions, which abandoned responsibility for national security and public safety, are a "heartbreaking tragedy" that must never be repeated.

The ministry pledged to work towards ensuring that such a "heartbreaking tragedy" does not recur and to firmly establish inter-Korean policies focused on peaceful coexistence and the sovereignty of the people on the Korean Peninsula. The verdict and the government's response highlight a deeply fractured political landscape and ongoing tensions surrounding national security and inter-Korean relations.
