Unions Protest University of Antwerp Savings Plan Amid Transparency Concerns

Trade unions ACV and ACOD staged a protest at the University of Antwerp, voicing strong opposition to the institution's planned savings measures. The university faces a significant budget reduction, needing to save 14 million euros by 2030 due to decreased subsidies and rising costs.

Union leaders expressed frustration over a perceived "total lack of transparency" concerning the specific areas targeted for budget cuts. Ilse Remy of ACV stated, "We want a say in the plans, both for staff and for students." She highlighted that years of underinvestment in university buildings now require funding, potentially at the expense of personnel, without clear figures on the necessary renovation costs.

Gert Nuyts of ACOD echoed these concerns, pointing to the potential disappearance of master's programs. He warned this could significantly impact students, forcing them to relocate for their studies and potentially creating financial barriers for those who cannot afford to move. Nuyts also noted the existing high workload for staff, making further savings unwelcome.

A university spokesperson, Peter De Meyer, asserted that staff are aware of the savings trajectory, which has been in development for months. He explained that deans and department heads were involved in formulating the plans, and it is impractical to consult all 7,500 employees individually. De Meyer also addressed the unions' criticism regarding the university's response to government austerity measures, suggesting that behind-the-scenes discussions have been more efficient than public protests.
