United Opposition List Would Be Ruling Party's Nightmare, Says Serbian Doctor

Niš-based doctor Dragan Milić has asserted that a unified electoral list combining student movements and opposition parties would be a "nightmare" for Serbia's ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS). Milić, founder of his own citizens' group, believes such a coalition would guarantee victory against the SNS and its allies, rendering tactics like "Bulgarian trains" or vote theft ineffective.

In an interview with the daily newspaper Nova, Milić emphasized the necessity of unity for political change in Serbia. He warned that any other approach risks leading the country down a path of uncertainty, where the SNS coalition's victory, through electoral manipulation, becomes a foregone conclusion.

Milić, whose citizens' group narrowly missed victory in the 2024 local elections in Niš, contends that the SNS can only maintain power if the opposition remains fragmented. He called for overcoming personal ambitions, referencing former Prime Minister Zoran Đinđić's advice to "swallow the frog," to unite and dismantle what he described as the "mafia that has occupied Serbia."

He expressed hope for a broad coalition, potentially led by students, encompassing all relevant political actors committed to ousting the current government. Milić pointed to the existing collaboration between his Movement for Decentralization of Serbia (PODES) and the 'Dr Dragan Milić' citizens' group with Miroslav Aleksić's People's Movement of Serbia. This local alliance, he noted, forms the core of the administration in Niš's Medijana municipality, Serbia's only "free municipality." Milić highlighted the positive experiences and responsible governance demonstrated in Medijana, citing the absence of scandals and significant savings as proof of effective leadership.
