United States EIA: Dangote Refinery Driving 7-fold Surge in Nigeria’s Petroleum Exports

Nigeria's petroleum export landscape has been dramatically reshaped, with seaborne shipments soaring to 561,000 barrels per day in the second quarter of 2026. This sevenfold increase from the previous year's 46,000 barrels per day is largely driven by the burgeoning capacity of the Dangote Refinery, a landmark industrial project.

The impact of the refinery is evident in Nigeria's trade balance, with a substantial rise in exports to Europe, which climbed from 15,000 barrels per day to 130,000 barrels per day in the same quarter. Concurrently, the nation's petroleum imports have seen a sharp decline, signaling a shift towards greater domestic processing and self-sufficiency.

This development, as reported by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), underscores the significant role the Dangote Refinery is playing in revitalizing Nigeria's energy sector. The surge in exports not only boosts the country's foreign exchange earnings but also positions Nigeria as a more influential player in the global petroleum market.
