Universitatea Cluj secures precious draw against Dinamo Kiev in Europa League qualifier

Universitatea Cluj earned a precious 0-0 draw against Dinamo Kiev in the first leg of their Europa League preliminary qualifying round. The match, played in Lublin, Poland, marked the Romanian club's return to continental competition after a 54-year absence.

Despite being dominated for large parts of the game, Universitatea Cluj managed to secure a result that keeps their European hopes alive. Dinamo Kiev had several clear chances to score, notably in the 8th minute when Pihalionok missed from close range and again in the 19th minute with a shot just wide. The Romanian side also had a significant opportunity in the 36th minute, but Oucasse Mendy was denied by a remarkable save from Dinamo's goalkeeper, Ruslan Neshcheret.

The second half saw Dinamo Kiev continue to press, with multiple shots testing Universitatea's Cypriot goalkeeper, Michael. A particularly dramatic moment came in the 79th minute when Shaparenko hit the crossbar from 15 meters. The game was also briefly interrupted by a partial power outage.

Universitatea Cluj last participated in a European competition in the 1972/1973 season, where they were eliminated by Levski Sofia. The second leg against Dinamo Kiev is scheduled for July 16 in Cluj. If Universitatea Cluj advances, they will face PAOK Salonic in the next round. A loss would see them drop into the Conference League to play SK Brann.
