University of Ibadan Appoints Prof. Olapegba as 14th Vice-Chancellor

The Governing Council of the University of Ibadan (UI) has appointed Prof. Peter Olamakinde Olapegba as the institution’s 14th substantive vice-chancellor. The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Chief Adebisi Akande, announced the appointment following a competitive selection process involving eight candidates.

Akande explained that the selection process began in April 2026 with advertisements in national newspapers, attracting six initial applications. A search team identified two more qualified academics, bringing the total to eight candidates. The council rigorously assessed all candidates on July 21, shortlisting five in order of merit.

The Governing Council appointed two members to the Joint Council-Senate Selection Board, while the University Senate elected two representatives. This board interviewed the five shortlisted candidates on Wednesday, ultimately recommending Prof. Olapegba as the most suitable candidate. Akande described the process as “thorough, transparent and highly competitive,” with the Governing Council unanimously approving the recommendation.

Olapegba, currently the university’s deputy vice-chancellor (administration) and a professor in the Department of Psychology, will succeed the incumbent vice-chancellor whose tenure expires on November 1, 2026. His appointment marks him as the 14th substantive vice-chancellor of Nigeria's premier university.
