Unprecedented Storm in Greece: Lightning Strikes Woman in Car, Floods Sweep Vehicles into Sea

An unprecedented storm struck the eastern Mani region of southern Greece on Saturday, August 16, 2026, leaving a trail of destruction. The sudden and intense weather event brought heavy rainfall, causing widespread flooding and significant damage to roads and infrastructure.

In just about two hours, the affected areas, including Oitylo, Neo Oitylo, Alypa, Kokkala, and Exo Nymfio, received approximately 140 tons of water per hectare. The floods were so severe that vehicles were swept into the sea, and the road network suffered extensive damage, with some sections completely destroyed. Emergency services received around 50 calls, primarily for drivers trapped in flooded areas.

Cars were washed into the sea, and significant damage occurred to the road network, both to the pavements and the bridges.

Firefighters responded to at least ten incidents, rescuing drivers and transporting them to safety. Some drivers managed to escape on their own as the storm subsided. Municipal and regional teams worked late into the night to clear debris and restore road access. The popular tourist spot of Karavostasi was particularly affected, with tourists stranded due to flooded roads.

Local officials described the phenomenon as "unprecedented" for the region. While no lives were lost, a woman was injured when lightning struck her car. She was taken to the General Hospital of Sparta for treatment and observation and is reported to be in stable condition. The incident prompted the activation of the region's emergency response system.
