UNSC condemns Swat suicide blast after Pakistan sounds alarm on Afghan terrorist havens

The United Nations Security Council has issued a strong condemnation of a recent suicide bombing in Swat, Pakistan, denouncing it as a "heinous and cowardly" terrorist attack. The statement came after Pakistan alerted the council that numerous terrorist organizations maintain operational bases within Afghanistan.

The council's press statement specifically condemned the Aug. 2 attack outside a police station in Kabal, Swat, which resulted in at least 16 deaths, primarily civilians, and injured dozens more. Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility for the incident.

Expressing solidarity with Pakistan, the UNSC conveyed deep sympathy to the victims' families and the nation. The council reaffirmed its long-standing position that terrorism in all its forms poses a severe threat to international peace and security. It emphasized the critical need to hold all those involved, perpetrators, organizers, financiers, and sponsors, accountable and bring them to justice.

Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar, had previously informed the UNSC that terrorist groups including the TTP, Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), Islamic State Khorasan (IS-K), East Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM), and Al Qaeda affiliates continue to exploit sanctuaries in Afghanistan. Pakistan urged the international community to ensure Afghan territory is not used for launching attacks.
