Uruguayan Footballer Bruno Betancor Dies at 22

The Uruguayan football community is mourning the loss of Bruno Betancor, a 22-year-old forward who died Wednesday from cardiac arrest. Deportivo Italiano, the club where Betancor most recently played, confirmed his passing through a social media announcement. The club expressed deep sorrow, stating that Betancor, also known as "Bola," would live on in the hearts of everyone at Deportivo Italiano.

Betancor began his football journey in the youth ranks of Fénix before joining Peñarol in 2022. He made his first-division debut for Peñarol in March 2023, appearing in 14 matches across different coaching tenures. In 2024, he embarked on a series of loan spells, first moving to Everton in Chile, where he scored one goal in seven appearances. He then played for Rentistas, featuring in 12 games, followed by a stint at Cerro, where he played four matches.

His career also took him abroad to the United Arab Emirates to join the reserve team of Al Ain. Upon returning to Uruguay, he agreed to join Cerrito but reportedly rescinded his contract before debuting. He also had a trial with Deportivo Riestra in Argentina but was not signed. During a brief period back in Uruguay, Betancor was filmed by security cameras taking sports apparel belonging to his teammates, a situation that was later resolved when he compensated them for the items.

In his final period, Betancor played for Deportivo Italiano in the Divisional C in 2026, scoring two goals in limited minutes over four matches. His death has sent shockwaves through Uruguayan football, with numerous clubs and players offering their condolences. Brazilian midfielder Ignacio Sosa, a childhood friend and former teammate from their time at Siete Estrellas Baby Club, Fénix, and Peñarol, shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, remembering their shared beginnings.
