US Air Force Accelerates Next-Gen Combat Power with B-21 and F-47 Ahead of Schedule

The U.S. Air Force is rapidly advancing its future air combat capabilities, with both the B-21 "Raider" stealth bomber and the sixth-generation F-47 fighter programs exceeding expectations.

General Dale White, the Air Force's top uniformed official for major weapon systems, confirmed that the B-21 program is approximately 25% ahead of schedule. This acceleration is partly due to a $4.5 billion one-time budget allocation in the 2025 fiscal year. Northrop Grumman plans to produce seven operational aircraft annually, with the first combat-ready B-21 slated for deployment in 2027. This long-range stealth bomber, capable of carrying conventional and nuclear weapons, is designed to penetrate high-threat air defenses and will eventually replace the B-1B and B-2 bombers, working alongside upgraded B-52Js for long-range strike and nuclear deterrence.

Simultaneously, the F-47 fighter jet, developed by Boeing, is reportedly at an "unprecedented" level of maturity. The Air Force intends to procure 185 F-47s to succeed the F-22 Raptor, allocating $5.03 billion in the 2027 fiscal year budget for its development. This next-generation fighter will operate in conjunction with Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA), which will serve as AI-powered unmanned wingmen for reconnaissance, electronic warfare, and strike missions, creating a manned-unmanned teaming capability.
