US Air Force Enhances Homeland Drone Defense with Argus XL System

The U.S. Air Force is bolstering its domestic defenses against the growing threat of small drones by integrating the Argus XL counter-drone system. Defense technology company Teledyne FLIR Defense announced it has received a major order to supply a large quantity of these systems, which will become a key component of the military's "Project Guardian Shield."

The contract, awarded by AeroVironment, is part of a three-year, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity agreement valued at $500 million. While Teledyne FLIR Defense did not disclose the specific value or quantity of the Argus XL order, the system will support Joint Interagency Task Force 401 (JIATF-401) in its mission to establish layered drone defenses for U.S. bases and critical infrastructure.

The Argus XL system is designed for fixed-site deployment and operates as a core detection node. It can simultaneously detect, identify, and track multiple aerial threats, including small and micro-drones, under various conditions, day or night. The system integrates radar, visible light cameras, thermal sensors, and command-and-control software, providing situational awareness and enabling integration with third-party sensors and countermeasure equipment.

The Argus XL's hemispheric detection capability aims to provide the necessary "eyes" for effective counter-drone operations, ensuring that potential threats are identified before they can pose a risk.
