US ambassador: America sees Meloni as a world leader, Puglia has great potential

U.S. Ambassador to Italy Tilman Joseph Fertitta declared that the United States considers Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni a global leader, not just an Italian one. Speaking from his yacht in Bari, Fertitta downplayed any tensions with Donald Trump, asserting they have an "excellent relationship." He suggested Trump's critical remarks stem from NATO critiques, not personal animosity.

Fertitta emphasized Puglia's economic potential for American businesses, pointing to its skilled workforce and strong manufacturing sector, particularly in aerospace. He encouraged more U.S. companies to invest in the region, noting existing American enterprises already operating there. The ambassador also expressed surprise at the region's diverse offerings, from tourism to manufacturing, which he had not fully appreciated before his visit.

Beyond economics, Fertitta lauded Puglia's rich history, culture, and hospitality, comparing its scenic beauty and historical sites, like Otranto, favorably to more established tourist destinations. He suggested that increased American tourism and residency could lead to the establishment of a U.S. consulate in Puglia, a move he deemed a decisive condition for the future. Fertitta also addressed Trump's tariffs, stating they would not hinder potential American investors in Italy and that their consequences for Italian businesses had been exaggerated.
