US and Iran Exchange Strikes; Tehran Halts Talks with Washington Amid Lebanon Escalation

The United States and Iran engaged in renewed strikes despite an announced temporary ceasefire, escalating tensions in the region. The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported conducting airstrikes against Iranian air defense systems and a drone control station. These actions were a response to what CENTCOM described as "aggressive actions by Iran, including the downing of an American MQ-1 drone" over international waters. CENTCOM also stated it destroyed two attack drones that posed a threat to regional shipping.

In retaliation, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced it had struck a U.S. airbase, alleging it was the source of an attack on a communication tower on Sirri Island. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump commented on Truth Social, suggesting Iranian authorities were interested in a peace deal favorable to the United States, and urged calm amidst criticism of his approach to the conflict.

Tehran has officially suspended negotiations with the U.S., citing the intensification of military activities in Lebanon. The agency Tasnim reported this suspension, with Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stating on social media that a violation of the ceasefire on any front signifies the collapse of comprehensive agreements across all fronts. Iran insists on an immediate cessation of military actions in Gaza and Lebanon and the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from territories it considers occupied.

The heightened conflict has led to a sharp increase in oil prices. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude surged by 6.5% to $93 per barrel, while Brent crude rose approximately 6% to $97.19 per barrel on the ICE exchange in London. U.S. Treasury yields also declined amid the geopolitical uncertainty.
