US announces first two deaths from cyclospora outbreak

Authorities in Michigan have confirmed the first fatal cases of cyclosporiasis in the United States, with two individuals dying from the intestinal illness. Both victims had significant underlying health conditions, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. The outbreak has resulted in 193 hospitalizations in the state, with 11,234 reported cases.

Federal authorities have identified lettuce served at Taco Bell restaurants across five states as a source of the outbreak. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that nationwide, there are 6,707 laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis as of July 28, with over 11,500 additional suspected cases pending investigation.

Cyclospora, a microscopic parasite, typically causes severe watery diarrhea, nausea, and other gastrointestinal issues. While the illness is rarely deadly, the current outbreak highlights the importance of identifying food sources and preventing further spread, especially among vulnerable populations with pre-existing health problems.
