US announces new strikes on Iran, targeting Revolutionary Guard sites near Strait of Hormuz

The United States launched new attacks against Iran on Tuesday, striking targets belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps near one of the world's most important oil shipping routes.

US Central Command said the operation began at noon Eastern time. In a message posted on Facebook, CENTCOM said, "US forces have begun launching attacks against targets of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps." It linked the strikes to recent alleged attempts by the IRGC to attack commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and US troops deployed in the region.

Iranian state television reported several explosions in the south of the country, near Bandar Abbas and Qeshm Island. Both areas lie close to the Strait of Hormuz, a major maritime route for global oil transport.

The latest bombardment came two days after US forces raided launchers on Iran's Kharg Island, the first operations of their kind in a month. Iran had previously responded with missile and drone attacks on US facilities in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran did not want the conflict to continue. President Donald Trump had promised retaliation after the Iranian attacks, but Washington has not so far indicated that it plans to resume a large-scale military campaign against Iran. Alongside the military action, the United States announced plans for an economic pressure campaign against Tehran, with details to follow.
