US Army Allegedly Used Grok AI in Iranian Operations

The U.S. military has allegedly utilized Elon Musk's artificial intelligence model, Grok, in its operations, according to a court filing reported by The Independent. Cameron Stanley, Director of the Pentagon's Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office, claimed in a sworn statement during a U.S. District Court case that Musk's company xAI's AI model plays an active role in U.S. national security and military operations.

Stanley asserted that the Pentagon employs a system called 'Grok Gov Model,' developed by xAI. He stated that this model is customized to meet the U.S. government's specific requirements and possesses features not found in other AI models. The Grok model has been integrated into the Maven Smart System, an AI-powered command and data analysis platform developed by the Pentagon and software company Palantir. Its applications reportedly include target identification, intelligence gathering, military planning, and logistics planning.

As an example of the Grok Gov Model's use within the Department of Defense, Stanley cited the 'Epic Fury Operation.' He stated that through the Maven platform, the U.S. military targeted 2,000 separate points with over 2,000 munitions within a 96-hour period. This suggests a significant role for AI in streamlining and enhancing the speed and precision of military actions.

This claim follows a March report by The Washington Post, which alleged that the Pentagon used Anthropic's Claude model and the Maven Smart System when planning operations against Iran. The report indicated that the Maven system identifies potential targets in Iran and provides their precise locations using advanced AI technology. It was also claimed that the system was used in the operation to bring Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to the U.S. via a military assault.
