US: 'Attacks against several targets in Iran have begun'. Tehran: Air defenses active

The United States has launched self-defense strikes against various targets in Iran, according to U.S. Central Command (Centcom). The raids commenced at 5:15 PM ET (11:15 PM Italian time), with Centcom asserting that these actions are a direct response to Iran's "continuous and unjustified aggression."

Reports indicate that Iran's air defenses are active, particularly in the western part of Tehran, and explosions have been heard in Sirik. The Iranian agency Fars reported anti-aircraft fire east of Isfahan, while the Tehran Times noted activated defenses in Asaluyeh.

President Donald Trump reportedly held a meeting in the Situation Room to discuss potential new attacks on Iran. Sources cited by Axios suggest Trump was considering a short, large-scale operation to pressure Tehran into negotiations. Attendees at the meeting included Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Chief John Ratcliffe, and Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth.

Pentagon Chief Hegseth stated that the upcoming strikes would be "powerful and decisive," adding that "President Trump is ready to make a deal, Iran would be well advised to accept it; otherwise, they will have to deal with the kind of plans I have had the opportunity to see at Centcom."

The situation in the Persian Gulf has escalated, with tensions rising between Iran and the U.S. following a series of retaliatory strikes. A previous incident involving a missile hitting a tanker off Oman, which resulted in the rescue of 21 Indian sailors and the disappearance of at least three, further heightened regional concerns.
