US attacks Iranian oil tanker near Kharg Island, agency says

An Iranian oil tanker came under a reported four-missile attack by the United States near Kharg Island, Iran’s main oil terminal, Tasnim news agency said.

The tanker was targeted about six miles from the island, according to a Tasnim correspondent there. The agency, which is linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, said no crew members had been killed and that the vessel was being evacuated. SNN also reported the attack.

The incident follows the hardest US strikes against Iran in more than a month, attacks that the article says killed 19 people, including four at a wedding. Tehran responded with bombardments targeting Kuwait, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Kharg Island handles most of Iran’s oil exports, making it a target with major symbolic and economic importance. The United States also attacked the island in July, in strikes that killed at least eight Iranian military personnel.

US President Donald Trump shared a video on social media the previous week depicting the destruction of Kharg Island. Tasnim reported, “An Iranian tanker was the target of a missile attack by the US military this morning six miles from Kharg Island.”
