US Deputy Secretary of State to lead delegation at OAS General Assembly in Panama

Panama is hosting the 56th Regular Session of the Organization of American States (OAS) General Assembly from June 20 to 27, with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau leading the American delegation. Landau's visit on June 22-23 includes meetings with Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino and other regional leaders to promote U.S. priorities such as border security, democratic governance, and trade. The U.S. delegation aims to strengthen hemispheric partnerships and foster common security and prosperity.

The assembly agenda addresses critical regional issues, including democracy, the situations in Venezuela and Haiti, hemispheric security, and organized crime. Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha emphasized the need for "useful multilateralism" to tackle regional challenges. OAS Secretary General Albert Ramdin praised Panama's commitment to hosting the significant political gathering, highlighting the nation's impact despite its size.

Landau's discussions will also focus on closer cooperation to combat illegal immigration, transnational crime, and security challenges. He will advocate for a democratic transition in Venezuela, support for Bolivia's democracy, and the promotion of reliable economic partnerships. This engagement underscores the Trump administration's commitment to reinforcing alliances across the Western Hemisphere.
