US Expands Online Passport Renewal Eligibility

The U.S. Department of State has launched a digital service allowing citizens to renew their passports online, provided they meet a stringent set of eligibility requirements. This new system aims to streamline the process for eligible individuals, though it comes with specific conditions that applicants must carefully review.

The authorities emphasize that applicants must verify that the web domain ends in “.gov”; the use of sites ending in “.com”, “.us” or “.org” represents a security risk.

To qualify for online renewal, applicants must have a passport issued within the last 15 years. Crucially, the current passport must be undamaged and free from significant wear or tear. Furthermore, the renewal process is only available for those who do not need to change personal information such as their name or gender on the new document.

Applicants must also be physically located within a U.S. state or territory at the time of application. A significant limitation of the online system is the absence of expedited processing. Therefore, individuals with international travel planned within six weeks of submitting their application are advised against using this method, as it cannot be rushed.
