US expands visa ban targeting adversaries’ supporters in Western Hemisphere

The United States is tightening its grip on the Western Hemisphere, announcing an expansion of visa restrictions aimed at curbing the influence of adversarial powers. The State Department declared on Thursday that the enhanced policy targets individuals acting on behalf of foreign adversaries within the region, thereby safeguarding US national security interests.

These individuals – and their immediate family members – will be generally ineligible for entry into the United States.

This move signals a robust assertion of American primacy in its traditional sphere of influence. The policy, enacted under President Donald Trump's national security agenda, seeks to block foreign adversaries from acquiring control over key assets and strategic resources. It also aims to thwart efforts to destabilize regional security, undermine American economic interests, and conduct influence operations against sovereign nations in the hemisphere.

In a clear demonstration of its resolve, the US has already slapped visa restrictions on 26 individuals identified as engaging in such activities. The announcement, made under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, underscores the administration's commitment to barring entry to those deemed detrimental to US foreign policy interests. While specific countries and individuals were not named, the policy's broad scope indicates a proactive approach to perceived threats.

Activities include but are not limited to: enabling adversarial powers to acquire or control key assets and strategic resources in our hemisphere; destabilizing regional security efforts; undermining American economic interests; and conducting influence operations designed to undermine the sovereignty and stability of nations in our region.

This expansion of visa restrictions follows a pattern of assertive actions by the Trump administration to reassert US dominance in the Western Hemisphere. Notably, recent actions include a military operation in Venezuela, leading to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro, and the stated intention to temporarily manage Venezuela's affairs and open its oil sector to American companies. The administration's focus remains on preventing further inroads by China, Russia, and Iran in the region.
