US Immigration Authorities Detain Far-Right Blogger Milo Yiannopoulos

U.S. immigration authorities have taken far-right blogger Milo Yiannopoulos into custody. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced that the "illegal immigrant from the United Kingdom" was arrested at an airport in Louisiana.

Yiannopoulos, who entered the U.S. in 2019, remained in the country after his visa expired. He was a prominent figure among American far-right extremists, known for his openly gay stance alongside racist, misogynistic, anti-LGBTQ+, and xenophobic statements. He actively supported Donald Trump during his 2016 presidential campaign.

In 2017, a planned appearance by Yiannopoulos at UC Berkeley led to violent student protests, prompting Trump to threaten the university with funding cuts. At one point, Yiannopoulos worked for the right-wing U.S. portal Breitbart, where he was hired by then-Trump advisor Steve Bannon. However, he left the outlet in 2017 due to controversial remarks about pedophilia.

Despite recent criticisms of the U.S. president, Yiannopoulos had defended Trump's strict policies against immigrants without valid residency permits. Last year, he wrote, "California needs ICE checkpoints at the entrances of supermarkets, gas stations, shopping malls, intersections, and government buildings." He advocated for the immediate deportation of anyone unable to prove legal status at these checkpoints.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Yiannopoulos himself overstayed his visa. An immigration judge issued a final deportation order against him in July after he failed to appear for a hearing. He will remain in ICE custody until his deportation.
