The Kuomintang (KMT) party has highlighted an article in the U.S. journal 'The National Interest' that analyzes its chairwoman Cheng Li-wen's proposals for cross-strait relations. The journal's article, titled 'Why the U.S. Shouldn’t Dismiss Taiwan’s Cheng Li-wen,' suggests that while maintaining deterrence is necessary, establishing communication mechanisms through diplomacy and dialogue is essential to truly reduce conflict risks and maintain peace in the Taiwan Strait.

'The National Interest,' a publication influential in Washington's foreign policy circles, argues that Cheng's approach of maintaining contact and promoting dialogue with Beijing addresses a critical strategic challenge that the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government has long avoided. The article points to a Taiwanese public opinion poll released shortly after former U.S. President Trump's visit to China, indicating that nearly 30% of respondents supported showing goodwill to mainland China, while only about 12% favored deepening cooperation with the United States. This suggests a growing public desire to reduce cross-strait conflict risks, aligning with Cheng's advocated path of peaceful exchange and dialogue.
