US lawmaker urges fairness in Nnamdi Kanu’s case

A resolution has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives calling on the Nigerian government to uphold constitutional and international human rights standards in the legal proceedings involving Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

H.Res. 1321, titled “Calling on the Government of Nigeria to ensure that all legal proceedings involving Mazi Nnamdi Kanu are conducted in full accordance with Nigeria’s constitutional obligations and international human rights commitments,” was introduced on May 22, 2026. Proposed by Rep. John James, the resolution expresses concern over the circumstances of Kanu's apprehension in Nairobi, Kenya, in June 2021 and his subsequent transfer to Nigeria.

The resolution references findings by the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. In a July 20, 2022 opinion, the group stated that Kanu’s detention violated international human rights obligations and called for his release and the provision of remedies. It also notes concerns raised by legal observers, courts in Kenya, and human rights organizations regarding due process, access to legal counsel, and detention conditions.

Furthermore, the resolution highlights humanitarian concerns stemming from prolonged detention without adequate medical care. It emphasizes the fundamental principles of international law, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which protect freedom of expression, fair trial rights, and the humane treatment of detainees.

Nnamdi Kanu is described as a political figure advocating for communities in southeastern Nigeria, who has publicly expressed views on political self-determination through speech and advocacy. The resolution underscores the United States' longstanding commitment to advocating for human rights and the rule of law globally. Kanu was convicted on seven counts by a Federal High Court in Abuja on November 20, 2025, and sentenced to life imprisonment, though prosecutors had sought the death penalty. He has since filed a notice of appeal.
