The United States is sounding the alarm on a dangerous convergence in Africa: the escalating threat of terrorism is inextricably linked to the booming business of international drug cartels. AFRICOM Commander Gen. Dagvin Anderson has directly informed the US House Armed Services Committee that extremist groups across West Africa and the Sahel are not just surviving, but thriving, by financing their operations through narcotics trafficking and other illicit activities.

The recent seizure of 35 tons of cocaine, valued at $1 billion – the largest in history – underscores the immense financial power fueling these terrorist networks. This illicit money is used for recruitment, weapons procurement, and sustaining insurgencies across multiple African fronts.

The situation is further complicated by the growing influence of global powers like Russia, China, and Iran in Africa, adding another layer of geopolitical complexity to an already volatile region. Meanwhile, national agencies like Nigeria's NDLEA are working tirelessly, as evidenced by their recent dismantling of a major international meth ring involving Nigerian and Mexican nationals, seizing illicit drugs and chemicals worth over N480 billion.
