US Military Tech Boosts Nigeria's Fight Against Insurgency, Defence Minister Says

Nigeria's Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, emphasized the significant impact of U.S. military technology on the nation's ongoing success against various security threats. During a visit to the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, D.C., he specifically pointed to advanced drone capabilities and satellite intelligence as key assets in combating insurgency, terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping.

The minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd), has emphasised the vital role of U.S. military technology, including advanced drone capabilities and satellite intelligence, in bolstering ongoing operational success against insurgency, terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other emerging security threats.

Ambassador Kayode Are commended Nigeria's security sector reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and affirmed the embassy's dedication to facilitating diplomatic channels for military training, intelligence sharing, and equipment support. The meeting underscored the importance of consolidating the long-standing defense alliance between Nigeria and the United States, particularly in counter-terrorism operations and the modernization of Nigeria's armed forces.

The discussions also extended to the volatile geopolitical and security landscape in the Sahel region. Both officials recognized the urgent necessity for collaborative regional security frameworks to effectively counter the persistent threat of extremist groups. General Musa also inspected the Embassy’s Defence Section, urging its personnel to uphold high standards of professionalism and dedication.

We want to consolidate our longstanding bilateral defence alliance with the United States, particularly in the areas of counter-terrorism operations and the modernisation of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

This visit concluded a week of high-level engagements in Washington, D.C., where the minister participated as part of a Federal Government delegation led by National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu. The engagements aimed to reinforce Nigeria's international defense partnerships while ensuring adherence to national sovereignty.
