The Trump administration is reportedly nearing an agreement to secure long-term access to a portion of Venezuela's vast crude oil reserves, a move that could potentially lower US crude import costs. Sources familiar with the negotiations indicate the deal is being discussed at the highest levels of both governments.

The prospective agreement is expected to allow the US government to designate a group of Venezuelan oilfields for development by American companies. The resulting oil supply would then be guaranteed for the United States. One source described the discussions as "real and being discussed at the highest levels of the US and Venezuelan governments."

Negotiations reportedly involve a "lease" as a potential legal framework, followed by an auction to allocate fields among US producers. A list of 17 fields under discussion includes areas in the Orinoco Belt and mature fields in Lake Maracaibo. Venezuela's constitution reserves core oil industry activities to the state, and current hydrocarbon regulations do not include acreage leases for oil areas, potentially creating legal hurdles.

Experts suggest the deal could raise constitutional questions and face legal challenges within Venezuela. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright is reportedly planning a trip to Caracas soon. This development follows the US efforts to ensure a stable flow of Venezuelan crude for American refineries and promote investment in the nation's energy sector, which currently produces about 1.25 million barrels per day.
