US Open: Disappointment for France's No. 1 as Diane Parry exits in second round

Diane Parry's breakthrough week ended abruptly at the US Open. Four days after claiming the first title of her career at the WTA 500 tournament in Monterrey, the French No. 1 fell 6-2, 7-5 to Romania's Sorana Cirstea in the second round.

Ranked 31st in the world, Parry could not extend her winning streak to seven matches. Cirstea, ranked 17th, broke at 2-2 in the opening set and then used a winning drop shot to fend off Parry's immediate chance to recover the break.

Parry was broken early again in the second set, but she refused to go quietly. At 6-2, 5-4, she saved two match points, then broke Cirstea to level at 5-5. The comeback lasted only briefly. Cirstea immediately won back the break and closed out the match in just under two hours.

The 36-year-old Cirstea, playing in her final Grand Slam tournament, will meet Italy's Jasmine Paolini on Friday for a place in the fourth round. With Elsa Jacquemot and Loïs Boisson already eliminated in the opening round, Léolia Jeanjean is the last French player remaining in the women's draw. She plays Austria's Russian-born Anastasia Potapova on Thursday.
