US Open: Zverev reaches fourth round and will face Darderi

Alexander Zverev reached the US Open round of 16 with a straight-sets win over Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo, 6-2, 7-6, 6-2. The German, the tournament’s top seed, will next face Italy’s Luciano Darderi for a place in the quarterfinals.

Zverev had spent a combined nine and a half hours on court in his first two matches. Against Tabilo, however, he moved more quickly in a match that began around 11 p.m. New York time and still finished well after 1 a.m.

The late start followed the end of a long women’s match between 18-year-old American Iva Jovic and 21-year-old Filipino Alexandra Eala. Jovic won 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 after more than three hours and will meet compatriot Coco Gauff in the next round.

Naomi Osaka also reached the round of 16 after defeating Belgium’s Elise Mertens 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. Osaka’s next opponent will be world No. 2 Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan.
