US plans hundreds of millions in new spending to counter China globally, documents show

The Trump administration is preparing a significant financial push to counter China's expanding global influence, with documents revealing plans to allocate hundreds of millions of dollars to various initiatives. This renewed focus includes a $175.8 million investment to replace outdated undersea telecommunications cables in the Caribbean and Central America, a move explicitly aimed at preventing Chinese encroachment in the region.

The administration has voiced strong concerns over China's economic activities in the Americas, particularly its ownership of ports and investments in telecommunications. A State Department official, speaking anonymously, stated that China's economic ventures, while appearing cheaper initially, ultimately prove more costly due to overruns and hidden fees. These activities, the official warned, pose risks to U.S. national security and economic prosperity.
