The United States is committing $15.5 million to aid Colombia following a powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck various regions of the country. The Department of State announced the funding, which will be used for emergency shelter, food, protection assistance, and damage assessments.

Washington expressed solidarity with the Colombian people and stated its readiness to support President Abelardo de la Espriella's administration as authorities identify the most urgent needs. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had previously voiced support for Colombia and indicated the U.S. administration was closely monitoring the emergency.

The U.S. response also garnered backing from political figures like Republican Senator Bernie Moreno, a Bogotá native. Moreno affirmed U.S. willingness to support its "great ally" and praised the "excellent leadership" of the new Colombian president. The earthquake occurred shortly after De la Espriella's inauguration.

The seismic event, registered by the Colombian Geological Service with an epicenter in San José del Palmar, Chocó, was felt widely across central and western Colombia. The coffee-growing region reported significant damage, and emergency services continue their assessment and relief efforts for affected communities.
