US prosecutors present case against alleged killer of conservative activist Charlie Kirk

Prosecutors in Utah have begun presenting their case against Tyler Robinson, who is accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk last September. A preliminary hearing, scheduled to last five days, commenced on Monday, with the aim of convincing a judge that there is sufficient evidence to proceed to a full trial.

The proceedings have drawn notable figures, including Charlie Kirk's wife, Erica Kirk, his parents, Donald Trump Jr., and far-right activist Jack Posobiec. Robinson, who has not entered a plea, sat with his attorneys during the initial day of the hearing. His defense team has unsuccessfully sought to remove the possibility of the death penalty, a punishment for which Donald Trump Jr. has publicly called.

During the hearing, Utah Valley University police officer Chris Bagley testified about Kirk speaking to a crowd before he was shot. Bagley described finding indentations in gravel on a nearby building's roof, which he characterized as an apparent "sniper pad." Defense attorney Kathryn Nester questioned Bagley about an empty pistol holster found on the ground, noting that Bagley did not take custody of it and was unsure if it had been fingerprinted.

Prosecutors are expected to present evidence including a purported confession note from Robinson, text messages allegedly admitting to the crime, and video testimony from Robinson's roommate and partner. The defense is anticipated to focus on ballistics testing, which reportedly could not definitively link the bullet fragment from Kirk's body to the alleged murder weapon. Kirk was a co-founder of the conservative student organization Turning Point USA and was credited with helping mobilize young voters for Donald Trump.
