US removes Syria from state sponsor of terrorism list

The United States has removed Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, a move that rescinds a decades-old designation and lifts severe economic restrictions. This action is seen as a significant step in improving relations between the two countries.

The US Department of State also revoked the designation of the al-Nusrah Front, also known as Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), as a global terrorist organization. HTS rebels were responsible for overthrowing former ruler Bashar al-Assad in December 2024.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the action "will help foster additional investment in Syria to promote political and economic stability." He emphasized that the removal of restrictions aligns with President Donald Trump's commitment to provide sanctions relief to Syria. However, the Treasury stressed that this does not alter its stance on countering global terrorism or holding bad actors in Syria accountable.
